How to use the files of
this website in X-Plane

[Self made translation, do not hesitate to send corrections !]

1) How to download files?

The photo files are very large and poorly supported by browsers, specially on loss of communication. To overcome these problems, an "applet" specific to the needs of the website has been written. It ensures the integrity of the download, even stopped and resumed multiple times, even at very low speed. If the download stops, do not delete the started file. Repeat whenever you want and it will be completed.

To ensure that your browser can use this applet, JAVA must be installed on your machine. Is often the case by default, but if not you can download it on this page. (Note: uncheck "Install Yahoo! Toolbar" during installation if you do not want to pollute your browser!).

MAC users : the selection of certain issues "special" your machine does not activate the "Download" button . It seems that there are also problems with the files with accented characters. The solution is simple: choose a different folder !

You can download one file at a time, else both downloads will be interrupted and you will most likely be penalized for a half-hour wait..

2) Comment installer le fichier que j'ai téléchargé ?

Once a zone file is downloaded, unpack it (see the FAQ) and place its contents into the subfolder "Custom Scenery" in X-Plane. Some archives contain only a single folder (Terrain), some contain 2 files (overlay and Terrain), see why in Chapter 3. Your directory tree should look

X-Plane xxx X-Plane installation directory
...... Another directory of X-Plane
Custom Scenery   Sceneries's directory, created by the X-Plane setup
 |
 |

......
......

Second zone photo directory, overlays (forêts-routes-objects)

There should be only one tree level between "Custom Scenery" and each "Earth nav data". According uncompressors and their options, it frequently happens that unpacks creates an extra level of folder located inside the archive.

Do not rename the folders whose names begin zPhotoXP voluntarily with "z". They must be placed at the end of your "Custom Scenery" (listed alphabetically) so that their content is drawn below all the other scenes installed .

To explore correctly the Zone Photos, in the X-Plane menu "Rendering Options", set "ResolutionTexture" to "Extreme". You can find more information about this setting in the Wiki of Xplane and the impact of photo-textured in the FAQ.

3) The default buildings have gone! (Or I want them to disappear!)

When X-Plane wants to display the tile content (1° longitude x 1° latitude aera), it must find its contents among all the scenes installed.

It runs in alphabetical order all the files present in "Custom Scenery" and ends with the folder "-global overlays-", then the folder "-global-Terrain", searching an "Earth nav data" folder containing a .DSF file whose name corresponds to the tile coordinates.

As to research, it processes the contents of all folders containing "Overlays" positioned BEFORE the first folder containing a "terrain" that he meets, then processes this folder content "terrain", but passes over the following folders.

But the texture files of Zone photo are terrain. So they "hide" all following overlays, including those from the "-global overlays-" default folder.

About Switzerland and France 16 terrains, an overlay file copy from the "-global overlay-"directory is included in each tile zip. That's why every ZIP contains two directories :

and it is why the default buildings, forests and objects are present even when the Zone photo is installed. Note that the directory "-overlay" is placed BEFORE the directory "-terrain" ...

If you want to hide generic buildings and forests, you can :

For France 15 terrains, this copy is not present. So installing the ground hides the generic objects, buildings and forests.

If you want to do reappear them, do the following:

  1. Add "-terrain" at the end of the folder name zPhotoXP you use, for it comes after the overlay file that you are going to create.
  2. Create (still in "Custom Scenery") a second folder with the same name as the terrain, but that will end in "-overlay". Then, you will have two folders that follow in this order:
    • zPhotoXP_+YY+XXX_Place-Overlay
    • zPhotoXP_+YY+XXX_Place-Terrain
  3. Copy in the folder "-overlay" the subfolder "Earth nav data" present in the "-terrain" folder
  4. This folder contains "Earth Nav Data" subfolder with a name like ±Y0±XX0 , which itself contains a file whose name matches DSF coordoonnées of the concerned tile.
Replace this DSF file with the same name you find in the
Custom Scenery | -global overlays- | Earth nav data | ±Y0±XX0

That's all ! At he next X-Plane launch, you will find all generic objects.
